How many birth dates do you have? Obviously
(except our ex PM Khaleda Zia) everyone will answer one (1). Our ex PM Khaleda
Zia has a lot of birth dates. Because she loves to hear “Happy Birthday to
You”, she loves to use it in politics. Her birthday stuffs are really funny to
the people of Bangladesh.
==================================================
Khaleda Zia was
born to Iskandar Majumder and Taiyaba Majumder at Dinajpur District on the 15th August, 1945 (the other dates
of birth Khaleda Zia used in the past were August 5, 1944 – Marriage
certificate; September 5, 1946 – transcript; August 19, 1947 – record of prime
ministerial oath; August 15, 1947 – press secretary; August 15, 1946
application form – electoral candidacy. She started celebrating 15th August as
her birthday after she lost power to Sheikh Hasina in 1996 election. The critics say she
deliberately chose this date just to hurt her opponent since it is a great day
of mourning for Hasina when most of her family members were brutally murdered
by some members of Bangladesh Army).
It appears from the media reports that Begum Zia had mentioned 5th Sept. and then 19th August as her birthday in her school and in her bio-data during elections in 1991 respectively. Obviously, none of these dates can be confused with the 15th August!
Sometimes people use to change their birthday in order to facilitate their entry into government service for which there is a fixed age limit, but in Begum Zia's case no such compulsion was there.
Now the valid question is what made a sensible person like her to change the birth date to 15th Aug. Is it to belittle the tragic day on which the father of the nation Sheikh Mujib and his family were most brutally killed? We cannot find any rational explanation of this quite irrational behaviour.
This appears to be a kind of endorsement of the heinous crimes committed on that very day! What a pity!
Khaleda Zia's actual birthday
Looks like we struck a nerve with a post on Khaleda Zia celebrating her birthday on 15 August. A comment suggested Khaleda Zia was actually born on August 15, and that we mind our own business:
So no, we don't have a problem with people celebrating their birthday on August 15. We would not even care if some low-level BNP cadre did this. But we really expected better from a leader of the nation.
And if the blogger expects people not to be born on August 15th, then the best advice for him is to talk to the Almighty for not allowing births on that date.My friend, therein lies the problem. Since you write English fairly well, I am assuming that you can read it well too. What did you think we were saying by this?
Celebrating & mourning, both are personal issues. Let Hasina/Rehana mourn their father’s death; and let Khaleda celebrate her birthday. Meanwhile, you can oil your machine, if any!
Shifting your birthday to the death-anniversary of the father of your political opponent was down-right mean spirited. Here is what Gulf Times reported:
Khaleda Zia’s educational certificate shows her birth date is September 5. Her marriage certificate shows she was born in late August. She changed the birthday to August 15 in the 1990s,” health minister A.F.M Ruhul Haque said.AFP dug a bit deeper, and sent this report to everywhere:
“She did it deliberately to celebrate the killings of August 15,” Haque said.
The birth date of Opposition leader Khaleda Zia has become a major controversy in Bangladesh, with the education board on Tuesday saying she was born on September 5 and not August 15 as she has claimed.
As the AFP report shows, at least one government body has verified that according to the registration she was born on Sept 5.
Rezwan has posted the images of the relevant documents, and we are posting one here for your perusal. You can see the rest on The 3rd world view.
The typical defense against this is that in Bangladesh people use a fake date of birth any way. True. That is why we have a bunch of people with a DOB of January 1. People typically shift the year of birth by 1 year as well, but no one increases the age by 21 days.
So no, we don't have a problem with people celebrating their birthday on August 15. We would not even care if some low-level BNP cadre did this. But we really expected better from a leader of the nation.

15 August and Khaleda Zia's birthday
Dear Mrs. Zia:
We hailed your kind gesture when you paid your respects to Dr. Wazed Miah by visiting Sheikh Hasina's residence.
Even though you enabled and encouraged the criminal acts of your sons, we could live with that. There are charges of corruption against yourself, and given what the other politicians do, we are not singling you out for that.
But what kind of petty, vengeful and moronic thought-process led you to agree to start observing your birthday on August 15--the day that Bongobondhu was murdered?
We know leaders of your stature are surrounded by idiots; that is not unique to your party. But you are a leader. By definition, you should lead, not blindly follow any and all advice given to you by those who are supposed to follow you.
Shifting your birthday to the death-anniversary of the father of your political opponent was down-right mean spirited. When the dead person in question is the father of the nation, your transgression crossed the line of civility and entered the territory of questioning the history of the nation.
We know; we know; the declarer of independence is still not resolved.
So you continue to insult Bongobondhu's memory by observing your birthday on August 15? Do you realize that in effect, you are lying to the whole nation?
Rise above this pettiness. If you are incapable of admitting your mistake, at least stop doing this. People will forget, and they might forgive, too.
One day, we all will be dead. Don't let the next generation read about your idiocy in the history books when your time comes.
